What is a Discord Snowflake?

Discord utilizes Snowflake IDs for all unique identifiers, including users, guilds, channels, roles, and messages. A Snowflake is a 64-bit unsigned integer that contains various components, making them unique and sortable by time without requiring a centralized database counter.

The Snowflake structure is distributed as follows:

  • Timestamp (42 bits): Milliseconds since Discord Epoch (January 1, 2015, which is 1420070400000).
  • Worker ID (5 bits): Internal Discord worker server ID (0 to 31).
  • Process ID (5 bits): Internal Discord process thread ID (0 to 31).
  • Increment (12 bits): A counter that increments for every ID generated on that process (0 to 4095).
